I Lost A lot of Money | The Arena Event Nobody Saw Coming
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What happens when a bold vision becomes one of the biggest and most expensive lessons of your entrepreneurial journey?
In the Season 3 premiere of The Foureva Podcast, Jamar Jones shares the story behind renting out the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee for a massive event. From the outside, it looked like a huge success. Behind the scenes, there were unexpected fees, missing sponsorship dollars, intense pressure, and a significant financial loss.
Jamar gets honest about what went wrong, why his vision may have been too big for that moment, and the leadership lesson he learned about listening to his team.
You’ll also hear his take on:
• 100K followers versus 100 paying clients
• Perfect strategy versus fast execution
• One flagship offer versus multiple revenue streams
• How he would use $10,000 and 90 days to start a business from scratch
• Why you cannot wear every hat when executing a major vision
It was expensive. It was chaotic. But they pulled it off, and no one can take that away from them.

Big Wins And Hidden Chaos
SPEAKER_01I essentially became the first African American small business owner to rent out Narita. There was absolute chaos behind the curtain. We lost money, we lost a lot of money doing that event. My vision was too big. And I should have listened.
Season 3 Return And What’s Changing
SPEAKER_01We are back. We are back. Um I'll explain why I have these chips in my hand very soon. Welcome back. Man, it's been a long time. It has been a minute. Uh this is the Forever Podcast Season 3, so we are mixing it up. Man, it's been a while since I talked to you guys. A lot has changed, a lot has evolved over time. Um, this podcast has been a crazy ride. We've had incredible guests on this podcast, and we're gonna continue that. So first let me give you an update of uh what's been happening uh with Forever Media. I'm also gonna give you an update with this podcast that uh we are gonna be changing up because we wanna give more uh give more to the people, man. We wanna we wanna create a show that really speaks like Forever Media, man. Like a lot of the contacts, a lot of the people we're connected with, a lot of the people in our circle are are all people that are connecting with us because of our style, our approach, how we do things, and we want to continue that. We want to continue that. So man, it's been a minute. It's been a minute. So we've already done a ton of episodes, and thank you guys also for all your support, all your support with um the likes, the comments, the shares, uh the reviews uh on all the platforms, continue those reviews, and um we're really gonna push YouTube uh this time as well. So we really want to grow uh also on YouTube, as well as the you know, Spotify, Apple, all those things, and uh really excited, really excited. So, first, before I get into the update of season three, this is a great way to start it.
Barbecue Chip Rating Segment Debut
SPEAKER_01So, this is not a sponsorship, but I love barbecue chips. I love barbecue chips, always have, always have loved barbecue chips. So, one thing I wanna I wanna add just for myself, just for myself, is that man, we want to do uh a series where we're gonna try out some barbecue chips, and I'm kind of a stickler on barbecue chips, but we're gonna give it a rating out of 10. Uh, this one just came out, so this is Doritos Protein, uh, 10 grams pro protein, everything's protein, man. Protein, protein, protein, everything's protein. So, I'm not really a big Doritos guy, but I'm a barbecue chip guy, and this is sweet and tangy barbecue. So, we're gonna go ahead and give it a try. And just see, like I was feeling, man. You know, there's a lot of good elements to a good barbecue chip, uh, which we're gonna get into it. We gonna get into it. So, but so far, it looks interesting. You know what I mean? And that might be the protein. It's uh it's earthy.
SPEAKER_00It's earthy, so I'll probably give that one.
SPEAKER_01Maybe a six out of ten. It needs something. It needs something. It's very earthy. Tang the tang is there. You have a little bit of sweetness, a little bit of spice. Um it is your classic kind of Dorito type flavor um also on it. But it's not really my forte. I think they messed up with that with that protein. They're trying to make it like it's healthy, but it's a chip. Whatever. Whatever. So that's a six out of ten. Six out of ten. Rank it. Alright, we're gonna keep I'll keep bringing different barbecue chips. Um, ones that I find out there. We'll do a rating. Guys, let me know what you think in the comments uh below. Uh, what's your favorite barbecue chips? What should I try, man? What should I try? Um I also feel like barbecue chips are just an underserved market, man. There's not that many, there's not that many choices out there. So when you see them, you gotta grab them. You gotta grab them. Alright. So
New Show Format And Segment Plan
SPEAKER_01the podcast, man. So the podcast is gonna have segments. Podcast is gonna have segments this time. So you're gonna see multiple different guests on here. We will have some um some highlight feature guests, but we also are gonna have uh guests that were gonna just come on for certain podcast segments. Um, so you'll be able to see a lot of different faces on here. The goal of the podcast is all entrepreneurship, you know, uh all entrepreneurship, but at an entertaining level. So we want to you know talk about trends, talk about things that are going on, give us breakdowns, inside looks into things. How did you build things? Um, how did you get to the point where you're at? What are the secrets of really building a business from uh to getting to six figures and then reaching seven figures and beyond? Uh, how do you build a personal brand? How do you become a speaker and get on stages? How do you get on podcasts and how do you elevate other people's podcasts? Uh, how do you get attention on your business? How do you build credibility? How do you um like craft your offers? How do you how do you pitch yourself? How do you position yourself? All these things we're gonna be covering in this podcast, so it's gonna be absolutely incredible, but we're gonna have different segments, so that way it'll be a little bit more faster pace. Uh we would love to hear all of your thoughts in the comments uh below. And we're gonna go into a couple segments here uh that I'm gonna do myself uh as well, so you guys can kind of see a little bit of what we're working with.
How Forever Media Helps Founders
SPEAKER_01So Forever Media, man, like uh the company is is doing uh is doing incredible. Uh we're growing in a way that um is purposeful. The people that are that we're helping is like, I mean, they're just having so much transformation, uh getting revenue into their business, building credibility, actually getting real assets for their business. Uh we're crafting signature talks, we are uh putting together offers, uh, repositioning their offers, charging what you need to charge, how to pitch yourself correctly, how to position your yourself uh in front of an audience or maybe at a booth at a conference. Uh so many different elements that we work on. Uh, but I want to talk about two core things the of way of how to get involved with forever media, uh, because we have really trimmed this down because uh we are doing a lot of things on the media side right now with forever media. So uh as far as to work with us to help your brand and your business, uh, we only really have two options. So one option is the six-figure circle. So if you're a business that is looking to finally get to six figures, that is for you um 100%. And we only made it because we were tired of terrible coaches out there uh not teaching you the exact things you need to do to build your business to get to six figures. And uh been doing that uh helping a lot of entrepreneurs grow uh and get them to six figures finally is what I call it. Because we only focus on four things in that in that program. So uh it's sales, marketing, systems, and brand. That's all we focus on. Everything else, it's all secondary, all secondary. You need to focus on that because you need to get revenue in the door and you need a system and you need uh to know how to sell your stuff. That's it. So that program is awesome. We have a great community in there. It's hot seat style coaching twice a month uh with a group, and it's incredible. A lot of breakthroughs, um, a lot of people supporting each other, and also uh I am very good at dissecting what's happening and then going in and getting real results, and also my team as well. So we have also other coaches that help on that call, and uh they will help you get to uh six figures in your business finally. So that's awesome because we never really offered that. Um, I think when we had season two out there, no one really knew about that offer. So we have that offer. So that's one of the things if you are over six figures in your business, the next one is the Forever Circle membership. So that's an annual membership that basically uh we have put together an offer because we have found a huge gap in the market that is not helping small businesses really grow and scale their brand and their business in a way where it's getting them real assets for their business, but also growing it exponentially uh and meeting the right people at the same time. Because a lot of the a lot of the things to grow your brand out there are for people that um are further along in their business, right? They're making five, ten million, they're on big retainers with PR agencies and or they're for you know, influencers, celebrities, those kind of people where they can be able to afford the big agencies out there. And uh we found a gap uh in the market to be able to offer what those agencies are offering or even more uh at a very um affordable rate for small businesses that are over six figures in their business. And so if that is of any interest, and I'll explain it here in a second, but if it's at any interest, uh we will have an ad in here somewhere that you can go and check that out, but it's at forevermedia.com uh and you can go and click and you literally can see exactly the investment, um, what's all included, everything. But in short, we've combined uh coaching and advisory with real experiences uh that we put on across the country to get assets into your business for branded photo shoots, video, podcast appearances, billboard activation, um, speaking on stages in front of a live audience, and so much more, so much more. And PR and media uh infuse with that to get real visibility on your business and getting in front of a large audience. So we infused all of that into one offer that it makes it where it's very easy, it's one decision away from changing your life, uh, to finally getting to seven figures and beyond that. And there's two different people that we work with is either a person that is trying to get to seven figures in their business and they're already past six figures. Um, we would love to work with you. You'd be a great fit for uh the Forever Circle membership if you care about your brand and your business at the same time and you want to grow and scale that. Uh, the second thing is if you've already had a successful business and you're looking to grow your brand um and grow the speaking or consulting coaching side of your business, you're also a great fit for the forever circle. Uh, we have worked with a lot of different individuals uh that feet that kind of meet that that bucket, and uh they're just doing incredible. They're speaking on stages, uh they've have a core signature talk, they have a framework, they can pitch themselves correctly, they know who their audience is, they can introduce their themselves to reintroduce themselves to their audience appropriately. So, oh my god, it's just awesome. It's awesome. So we uh are on a path to uh to getting more members in there. We have a kind of a goal for ourselves of how many members we want in there by the end of the year. So uh if you if any of that interests you, if you want to be on a billboard in Times Square, uh hit us up. Hit us up forevermedia.com. Uh and also myself, like I'm speaking, you know, all over the place. I'm doing uh podcast stuff. I got my book, uh, we got a lot of media stuff in the streaming world that I'm doing. Yeah, there's a lot, there's a lot going on. There's a lot going on. Um, and so we're just trying to keep keep up that pace, right? And the podcast here is going to we want to really double down on the podcast. The we have a very unique position in a way that we can reach people that normally people wouldn't be able to reach, and we want to bring those people to you. But we want to do it in a fun and engaging way. We don't want to just have bland conversations and people talk about their backstories and it where it just like bore it, it bores you, right? We want to make it entertaining and engaging so that way people um really get to know and love these people that we're bringing on, and they want to learn more. They're they're intrigued, but they're also engaged and entertained at the same time. So that's a perfect segue. And to let's go into just a couple of uh segments uh that you'll see here on the podcast.
This Or That On Business Growth
SPEAKER_01We have about 10 segments um that will be rotating, so there's different segments. But first one this or that, this or that. So, this is a fun one. Um couple questions. I'm not gonna uh take all these, but I'm just gonna do a couple questions. So this or that. So the the goal of this uh segment is that you get to pick this or that, and you get to explain why. Uh you know, figure out which one would you choose. So let's go with this one. One flagship offer or multiple revenue streams. I feel like this is a good one. This is a good one. So, one flagship offer or multiple revenue streams, guys. Put in the comments uh below of which one you would choose. So, for me, because I've been in business for 11 years, I think it depends on what stage of business you are in. So let me explain really quick. So, if you are just getting started getting to six figures in your business, you need one flagship offer. You don't need 50,000 offers. I've made that mistake myself before, and you don't need it, you don't need it. Um flagship offer and get to in and really become known for that thing. Too many of us have too many ideas and we run in all these different directions, but the one flagship offer can really set you apart because you become known for that thing. Multiple revenue streams comes up when you reach when you're closer to seven figures in your business or even halfway. Um, and if you find an opportunity where there's an upsell or a downsell where you can have multiple revenue streams that are coming into your business, um that that's that's my belief. Uh it it it's really heavy, um heavily decided on stage. Where what stage of business are you in? All right, let's go into the next one. Next one is 100k followers or a hundred paying clients. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Sorry to interrupt, but we got a word from our sponsor. Uh at Forever Media, we have an ecosystem to monetize your brand positioning and have you become unforgettable. We combine coaching, transformative experiences around the country with PR and media to help you get beyond six and seven figures in your business and skyrocket your credibility. We've helped over 2,500 entrepreneurs, and we have taken clients from six figures to multiple seven-figure businesses with a brand at last. You're one decision away from changing your life. Visit www.forevermedia.com to learn more and book a complimentary call. At Forever Media, we make big dreams possible. Now let's get back into the conversation. All right, so put in the comments which one which one would you like? Okay, so first, uh 100k followers is pretty nice. There's a lot of different ways where you can leverage your your audience for opportunities when you're reaching out to people, you instantly build credibility because you have somewhere to send them as kind of a social proof example, and it could be a vanity metric, but people see that and they are intrigued and at least will take you seriously, even if you have no proof of what you do, and that's facts. You at least will see the 100k followers by huh, they gotta have 100k for some reason, right? Either they paid for it or they really got it. Uh or 100-paying clients. So it depends on what the clients are paying you. Because look, if even clients, if they pay you, let's take out, let's take out the calculator real quick. So even if every client paid you 30 bucks, you know, times 100, that's $3,000. Now, are they paying $3,000 a month? That's not bad. Uh, because $3,000 a month times $12 is $36k, you know, you're a fourth of the way there uh to getting to getting six figures uh in your business. So it depends on how much they're paying. But I would take the hundred paying the 100 paying clients over the 100k followers because depending on how much they're paying you, you can have an upsell, downsell uh that you could do for those clients. And also those clients, as long as you're offering a great service, will go and get you a hundred more clients or even half, 50 more clients, right? Referrals. We know that referrals are always a number one driver in most businesses is referrals. And so we also have a good ascension uh for them as they're growing through our business, and if we have a good advocacy plan to make them a fan of what what we do, um where they're telling other people, that can snowball uh pretty pretty quick. So I would choose the hundred paying clients. All right, let's do one more. Oh man, oh man. The let's go to this one. Perfect strategy, perfect strategy or fast execution. Perfect strategy or fast execution. Um man, I'm kind of in the middle. Can I be in the middle? Guys, can I be in the middle? I uh perfect strategy. A lot of times people are waiting forever for their whole lives to do something. Uh fast execution can sometimes bite you in the backside. So I would probably choose at least my style is fast execution. I want to be able to uh like a good friend Corey says, like be able to fail fast, right? Be able to fail as quickly as possible so you can know what you did wrong and know how to repair it, or know how to ditch it and go go. A different direction. If you wait for the perfect strategy, sometimes it ain't perfect, even if you think it's perfect. So, and I've never really heard of anybody mapping out their entire business plan and implementing the entire business plan and it going exactly according to plan. I've never heard of that. Never, never heard of that. So I would go with fast execution if I had to pick one. Fast execution. Put in the comments below which one you would choose. Okay. Let's go to the next segment. The
The Arena Event Breakdown Story
SPEAKER_01breakdown. The breakdown. I think we need some uh we need some sound effects or something. Like we'll get a sound effect for each one of these. Um I think that would be cool. So the breakdown. So we're gonna kind of give uh insight into one win that looked easy from the outside, but was chaos behind the curtain. So we'll just go, I'm just gonna do one of these. Um one win that happened that was chaos behind the curtain. Man, I mean I can almost think of man, chaos behind the curtain. I mean, the I mean the the easiest thing for me to to think about is uh when we did the arena event. Um so we rented out uh the Pfizer Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Uh this is literally a sports arena. Just had a perfect scenario that I was able to uh rent out that arena. Um I could have a whole podcast episode just on this on that whole scenario, but I'll do it for this for this segment. Is it was a win in the sense that we executed it. We did it, we pulled it off. Uh, crazy enough, with a small team of about seven or eight uh people, we pulled it off. Um huge conference events had about 400 people there. Uh we blacked out a lot of the the arena um to have a stage on the arena floor, and then we had the stadium seating. And um, and I would say that from the outside looking in, it probably looked like because I got from multiple, multiple people, and this was not just all me, this was I had to you know uh props to the team that put this thing together, is uh multiple people said this was one of the most well-ran events that they've ever experienced, and even with us having some hiccups for for the scale and magnitude that that event was. So, but there was absolute chaos behind the curtain. So the original goal was for that for that conference to you know uh A have a lot more people to attend it. Um so to get and and then also to create a big splash in Milwaukee and beyond that, because we you know I essentially became the first African-American small business owner to rent out an arena. I don't think anybody else that owns a small business has rented out an arena, an entire arena. Um, normally it's for like concerts and um uh bigger shows that are in there, uh sports, you know, bigger agencies that are that are going into that uh space and renting that out. Um so the original goal was uh brand awareness was revenue. We really wanted to generate that, you know, have an initial piece and then have that be a huge revenue driver for us, and then also to build on that. We really wanted to do that every single year. So that was the goal. But what actually happened is that um it did build up a lot of brand awareness in the sense throughout the city of Milwaukee, definitely became um a face, especially that next year. It was very uh a lot of people started to that started to get around um of what we did. Um we lost money, we lost a lot of money uh doing that event. Um we gained some clients throughout the next year. It wasn't like event ended and a flood of clients that did not happen, and I thought it was gonna happen, and it didn't. Um, and there's a lot of reasons for that. It's because of the goal of the focus of that event, um the the layouts, uh, the things that we did back then, I wouldn't have done today. The people we were trying to get to come to the event are different than the people that we serve today. So there were a lot of entrepreneurs that showed up at that event, but we were like trying to get a lot of business professionals also to show up and be able to place like to get jobs and opportunities, nonprofits were there, like we were basically trying to create this huge ecosystem of community around the city, and we really should have been more narrow in there. So the plan really broke down in the sense I even had people on my team trying to narrow this down, and I think my vision was too big, and I should have listened, is what is what it is what it came down to. So the plan broke down in the sense that I should have, and this is good for everybody, like a good leadership lesson, because we may have a big idea, and we don't I and the thing I I hate is people like dismissing my ideas. But as I get older and and the longer I'm in business, I now know how to kind of have two different lenses on things. So I may have a big idea, and it might be uh even a great idea, but is it the right time to do that? Uh what are some other elements? Is it is it lasered in enough to really get to reach the goals that you originally wanted? Um and the and the truth of the matter is like no one ever really knows. But I definitely should have listened. I definitely should have listened uh now in retrospect. Um who or what saved it? So really, I mean, there's so many other things. This is a very big this is very big because there was also like surprise fees that happened like two days before the event um that I didn't know that that we were gonna have to pay um for video release and union fees and all this other stuff. Like we there are so many surprises with renting out an arena and doing an event at that scale, and then the sponsorships that we had to get to try to cover that, and a lot of the bigger sponsors didn't come into play, so like we weren't able to yeah, we had to front a lot of the cash ourselves, and um, we're a small business, right? Like we you know, it's not like we just had a a big wad of cash sitting on the side to be like, yeah, let's just throw it at this. Um so as a team, we all pitched in and did what we had to do to make it to make it happen, and I'm forever grateful uh for the team uh putting that together because we executed, we did it, and no one can take that away from us. Um which that is one thing I'm proud of, you know. Like it's still a story to this day, it's kind of like a crazy story to share with somebody. Um but I'm happy that I did it. I'm happy I did it as far as in the sense of well, I'm gonna say I'm happy I did it. Um I'm glad we pulled it off. Let me rephrase that. I'm glad we pulled it off, and I'm happy to tell the story today. Let me that's that's what so what's one thing you would tell somebody attempting the same move? Um, you better have a gigantic audience if you want to rent out an arena or a huge facility, you better have a gigantic audience. I'm talking like a million plus or 500k followers or a very engaged audience where even if you have a hundred thousand followers, you can you know for a fact, I would even pre-sale tickets and be like, yo, I got this crazy idea. Who's in? Put down money, put your money up. Um, that's one. Have an audience. Have an audience. Number two, don't do this as a very as a small business. Um, you need to have an extra hundred K of just capital set aside if you are going to try to attempt to pull anything of this magnitude off. Um that's that's number two. Number three, you need to hire an event management company to do this. We did not. We have done a lot of events in our life, and we still do events, but we do retreats, which are way easier and easier to uh contain. Um but if you're gonna do something of missed magnitude, you need to hire the the company, it is gonna cost you, but that means all the little stuff you don't have to worry about. You just have to you know talk to them and then they gotta figure it out. Uh, because you as the producer should not also be the event planner, you should not also be the person on stage, you should not also be the person that's selling, you shouldn't be like you can't beat every single hat during that event. You need to do what you were called to do. And so if that's you on the stage, if that's you selling, if that's you as just the producer in the vision, um, are are you the event planner? Like you you need to figure out your lane and you just stick in that one lane. Um so there's some definitely some parameters for you, you know, should try to do that ever again. Okay, so that's the breakdown. That's a little bit of the breakdown. Um, we will ask other guests uh you know the breakdown. That was kind of a long-winded one because that was a huge, huge thing that we did. Okay, um let's go into this last one, just a quick last one. Spend
Starting From Scratch With 10K
SPEAKER_01or save. Spend or save. Uh so you're starting over from scratch with 10k and 90 days to generate revenue. Where's every dollar going? Put in the comments below. Put in the comments below. You have $10,000, 90 days, where's every dollar going? So for me, if I was starting over, obviously you need to be legit. So get your LLC, get your um get a little website up, um that just, you know, even a one-pager. Don't even get multiple pages, one pager. Uh you don't even need a logo, to be honest. Um, you could use your social media accounts. Uh, and then I would just really focus in on the first 90 days. So I would focus like that first week of just developing the offer. What am I selling? Who am I selling it to? What's the core value that I'm offering? What's the transformation? And uh how much is somebody willing to pay for it? And who do I know right now that's willing to pay for it? And then I would reach out to those people and really offer to do it for free because you need examples. You need you need to show that you do this for real. So I would get I would give somebody a freebie and say, hey, on uh just contingent of you providing uh if you get value from this, you give me some recommendations of who else we could, you know, uh that would get value from this. And if you want to continue working, here's what the price would be. Uh and I would start pushing that and I would share the journey. So that's part of our framework here at Forever Media. It's like, share the journey, you know, start posting that you're doing these things, start sharing that you're working with these people. Um, what's the transformation? What are the steps? What's the process? So that way people see you in action. And uh I would first start with the core, like that first month is really the core group of people that you know. And then I would figure out where do the people that I can help, where do they hang out at? Where do they hang out at? I'm going to there, I'm going to those events. So if that's a networking thing, there's a lot of free networking out there. If there, if it's a quick little uh small membership that you have to pay, that could be where the 10k goes. Um and then also I would um 10k, 10k this so yeah, you just need you need credibility, you need credibility, and you need to show people you know what you're doing. That's the that's the core thing. Um I also would you know once I have the offer developed and I know I need a CRM, so I would pay either um for a CRM or start a free trial for one, but then you know, invest into uh a CRM. I would probably pay for some AI tools, um, like ChatGPT. I mean, even that's free to a certain extent, but um to develop what the offer is, your positioning, um, and your pitch of how you're getting out there, you just need to sell. Like, that's with a lot with this 10k stuff, like you don't even need to spend it all. Um, yeah, I I website and then just be able to show people, build a social proof page, um, start showing people that you know really how to do this. Um, maybe invest in a camera. I mean, you could use your phone, like it's these days you don't need a bajillion things to start a business and be successful. Um the the 10k a laptop. I'm just trying to think of like the necessities. Get a laptop, go work somewhere with some Wi-Fi, library, man. That's what I would do. Like, you need clients, you need to talk to a lot of people, as many people as possible. I wouldn't do any paid ads or any of that stuff. I would focus on the core circle that I know, see who do they know, promote and post on social media the journey, and you will get clients through that. You will get clients through that. Um, DM, outreach, it's a lot of just just grinding, work ethic. That's what it is. Keep the 10k, and then as you build, then you start to, you know, kind of have your small investments. Maybe you host your own event that you want to put together. Find a place that you can collaborate with um for the space, and then you're buying a little bit of food, and you have like you know, a small little evening events to really showcase what you do and help people learn and get people into your ecosystem. Like, I I I don't think I mean a lot of that you don't really need 10k. So, man, so anyways, let me know what you guys would think. You know, like would you guys prioritize speed over comfort? Um, like how would you how would you spend the 10k? We'd be super interested to see how you guys would spend the 10k.
